Memories of Concordia Result in Gift

Sixty years ago, 14-year-old Edward Eaton rode his bicycle to and from school every day through the streets of Bronxville, N.Y. Even though a public school was just down the street from his home, his mother thought he would get a better education at Concordia Collegiate Institute, an all-male Lutheran preparatory school in Bronxville.

Most of the other students stayed at this boarding school in lower Westchester County; however, Edward's mother arranged with then-president Dr. George Romoser for her son to attend day classes for $50 a year.

After graduation in 1939, about half of Edward's classmates went on to attend the junior college associated with the institute, then on to Concordia Seminary in St. Louis to become pastors in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

However, Edward attended New York University and eventually became an electrical engineer. He served in the U.S. Navy and then went on to a long, successful career with General Electric. Unfortunately, over the years he lost track of the boys he went to prep school with and lost touch with his high school alma mater.

After time had passed, the president of Concordia College received a surprising letter. The writer asked about Charitable Remainder Unitrust and stated that he wanted to make a gift of several thousand dollars to the school, "as a late 'thank you' for the many blessings I have enjoyed at least partly due to the education and the training I received at Concordia."

Al Macke, an LCMS Foundation gift planning counselor in the New England district, was contacted about establishing the Unitrust. Macke discussed many options with the Eatons. Eventually, they decided to give an outright $10,000 gift of stock and cash to Concordia's Annual Fund. Macke helped them fill out the proper forms and prepare the transfer letter for their broker.

Even though Macke's expertise in setting up the Unitrust was no longer specifically needed, he wanted to continue working with the Eatons. "The LCMS Foundation is a true service organization," Macke commented, "in that the needs of the donor come first. We are hear to work with the donor one-on-one to accomplish their charitable objectives- no matter how large or small the gift."
